While a porcelain inlay is appropriate when there is no damage to the cusps of the tooth, a porcelain onlay is used when the damage is a little more extensive.

What Is the Procedure for Porcelain Onlays?
First, the decayed area of the tooth is removed. A mold of the tooth is taken, and digital data is sent to the dental lab that will create a restoration porcelain onlay. Your porcelain onlay will be ready for placement in about 2-3 weeks, so a temporary onlay will be placed on the tooth for the time being. During your next visit, the onlay will be placed into your mouth and set with cement. Your tooth will look natural, and you won’t be able to tell the difference from a natural tooth.
