Invisalign FAQ

When braces are unsightly, they make patients, especially teenagers, self-conscious. Fortunately, there is Invisalign® – a method of straightening teeth that is virtually invisible.

Using cutting-edge 3D computer imaging technology, Invisalign® pre-plans your entire treatment from the very beginning, even going so far as to map out the final positioning of your teeth. After that, you will be given clear aligner trays that are customized for your teeth. These aligners will shift your teeth gradually and will be changed out every two or three weeks until your teeth reach the desired position.

Invisalign® uses a special type of clear, durable plastic that makes your aligners virtually invisible to others. This form of treatment will allow you to achieve the best possible smile in a way that is much more discreet. You might need small, enamel-colored bumps, called “attachments,” on a few teeth, but as they are tooth-colored, they are fairly unnoticeable.

As you change out your custom aligners every two or three weeks, you will gradually start seeing your teeth shift into position. Each new tray is adjusted slightly to direct your teeth where they need to go.

You can remove your Invisalign® trays at any time, but should only do so when you are eating, brushing or flossing your teeth, or cleaning your aligners. In general, your aligners should be worn 22 hours a day to give you the best results.

As with anything, Invisalign® will take a little getting used to. During the initial period, you may notice a minor “lisp” in your speech. This will only last a short amount of time.

When your trays are being worn, your orthodontist will probably advise you to drink only cold water, so as to avoid distorting the trays. As such, it is important to advise your orthodontist of your eating and drinking habits prior to treatment.

You can clean you Invisalign® with a toothbrush and water. Antibacterial hand soap can also be used, when applied with a toothbrush, if necessary. It is important to always thoroughly rinse your toothbrush and aligners before using them.

Your treatment length will vary based upon your individual teeth. However, most adult patients finish treatment in about 12 months. If you are a Teen Invisalign® patient, your treatment time may be affected by the growth of your permanent teeth.
