What Are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants can help to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar which can cause tooth pain or cavities. The primary purpose of dental sealants is to protect a tooth or teeth from decay, thus avoiding having to invest in costly crowns, dental implants, or a dental bridge later in life.
Dental sealants are typically made from a thin coating that is either clear or tooth-colored, and we carefully paint your sealant into the grooves of your teeth, effectively preventing bacteria and other debris from entering your tooth and thus accelerating the decaying process. After the sealant procedure has been completed, your tooth will then be exposed to a curing light that will help the sealant harden quickly.

What Is the Procedure for Dental Sealants?

Then a special liquid is added to the teeth so that the sealant can properly attach, and a clear or tooth-colored sealant is painted directly onto your teeth. A special light is then used to harden the sealant so it acts as a barrier between your teeth and any food or debris that could cause decay.
Preparing for Dental Sealants
There is no special preparation necessary for dental sealants, other than scheduling your appointment now. You should brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before having a dental sealant applied; however, we will also “buff” your teeth during the procedure so as to make it easier for the sealant to adhere to them. Each tooth can take approximately 3-5 minutes to properly seal, and a rubber dam may be used to help keep each tooth isolated as the dentist works.
Recovery from Dental Sealants
After your sealant is placed, we will ensure the sealant does not affect your natural bite, but you will not have any specific recovery considerations following your dental sealant treatment.
